Making introductions: te, le, les
Follow these guidelines when you wish to introduce people:

te (to one person, informal) Laura, te presento a Gabriel.
le (to one person, formal) Sra. Durán, le presento a María.
les (to two or more people, Luis y José, les presento a Margarita y a Pablo.
informal and formal)

Note: When the defi nite article el (the) follows a or de, the two words combine to
form al or del.
Tomás y Pilar, les presento al señor Rojas.
Te presento al amigo del estudiante nuevo.

You have several responses
to choose from when meeting
someone, among them: Mucho
gusto, Tanto gusto or El gusto es
mío. In addition, males can say
Encantado, while females may
wish to say Encantada.

Question-asking words
You are already familiar with several words used for asking information questions:

¿Cómo estás? How are you?
¿Cuál es tu cuaderno? Which (one) is your notebook?
¿Cuáles son? Which (ones) are they?
¿Cuándo es la clase de español? When is the Spanish class?
¿Cuánto es? How much is it?
¿Cuántos hay? How many are there?
¿Dónde están ellos? Where are they?
¿Por qué está ella allí? Why is she there?
¿Qué es? What is it?
¿Quién es de Cancún? Who is from Cancún?
¿Quiénes son ellos? Who are they?

Note: Unlike qué, cuál (or cuáles) may never be followed by a noun: ¿Qué autobús
tomas? (What bus are you taking?); ¿Cuál de los autobuses tomas? (Which of
the buses are you taking?).

Saying where someone is going: ir
The verb ir (to go) is irregular in the present tense.

• The verb ir is usually followed by the preposition a (or the contraction al) and
a destination.
¿Por qué no vamos a la biblioteca? Why don’t we go to the library?
Voy al cine. I am going to the movies.
Note: When you want to suggest going somewhere or doing something (“Let’s go
somewhere/do something!”), use Vamos a (+ a place or an infi nitive).
¡Vamos a la ciudad hoy! Let’s go into town today!
¡Vamos a tomar el autobús! Let’s take the bus!
